Could a Neck Support Pillow Help Improve Your Sleep?

Hi everyone....

I’m often asked if a neck support pillow will help with neck pain. First off, you should ask yourself these questions.

1).Does it seem to take you hours to fall asleep at night because you can just never seem to get comfortable?

2). Do you toss and turn a lot during the night so that when you the morning comes you feel just as tired and unrested as did before you ever went to bed?

3). When you wake up in the morning do you suffer from a stiff neck and soar shoulders?  If you answered yes to any of these questions, then switching to a neck support pillow may help you to get more rest and improve your quality of sleep.

A neck support pillow, specially contoured to help support your necks natural curvature,  will help you to be more comfortable when you lay down because it can help to properly align your neck and your back, supporting this sensitive area by relieving the stress that normal pillows usually places on your spine by putting you in an unnatural sleeping position.  This strain on the spine is often what makes it so difficult for you to get comfortable and fall asleep and what keeps you tossing and turning throughout the night.  The heat sensitive compound of the neck support pillow adjusts and shapes itself to the natural shape and alignment of your body regardless of which position that you sleep in.  And you can easy use a lavender linen spray on the sheets and a regular pillow case to cover your neck support pillow to help you relax even more.

Since the natural alignment promoted by the neck support pillow also helps to open up the air ways, using the neck support pillow can help to improve snoring so that you do not keep your partner awake at night and you both can get a peaceful night of restful sleep and wake up feeling refreshed and ready to tackle the day.

However,  if you are still having trouble sleeping and you wake up in the morning feeling stiff with an aching back and neck, then this could mean that there is something else going on with your neck and  it may be time to call a Doctor of Chiropractic.

The 7 Biggest Myths About Auto Accidents

pinole ca Chiropractic Care and auto injuries

Thank you for reading this auto accident victims special message: “The 7 biggest myths about auto accidents.” My name is Dr. Jennifer Hammett

“You’ve been in an accident. You’re worried . You’re stressed. Your life is disrupted. You can’t believe it. An accident couldn’t have happened at a worse time! Now, on top of your career and home life, you have to go through the hassles of dealing with insurance companies, getting your car fixed, re-arranging all your appointments, and finding a way to get around without your car. You’re so busy! You don’t have time for all this. Why did this have to happen to you?

“And to top it off, you may have a serious injury you don’t know about. You may have felt it and dismissed it. That headache is just stress.. my neck stiffness will go away by the morning.. I just need more sleep. It’s no big deal...

“Well, the truth is your head can move up to 4 times the speed of impact in a split second. So that little 10 mph fender bender may have snapped your neck back and forth at 40 mph ripping and tearing ligaments, muscles, nerves, and other ‘soft tissues.’ Often, with no visible injury until arthritis cripples you 7 or eight years down the road.

“Whether the accident was your fault or not, the likelihood of injury is greater, not less, than most of us think. There are many politically and insurance driven myths out there that have little to with the real facts. It’s sick and I’m tired of it. I’m tired of watching people lose their health when they don’t have to. That’s why I put together the 7 biggest myths about auto accidents.

“Myth #1 – The amount of damage to the car was minimal, so it is unlikely anyone was injured.

“Fact: Dr. Larry Nordhoff, D.C.  proved that there is no relation between the amount of damage a car sustains and the injuries  its occupant suffers. There are many factors involved that contribute to injuries such as position in the vehicle, age, previous accidents, genetics, and much more. In fact, a small impact, even at low speeds is still capable of causing a disabling injury.

“Myth #2 – All people fake injuries to collect money.

“Fact: The time and hassles required to pull this off are so great only true con-artists and criminals ever try. Before paying a claim, the insurance companies will always check to verify if it’s legit. Unfortunately there are people who rip insurance companies off, but if your case is legitimate , don’t let the bad apples ruin your rights.

“Myth #3 – If I don’t feel pain right away, then I’m probably fine.

“Fact: Soft Tissue injuries to your neck and back can go weeks or months before you start feeling headaches, neck pains, or back pains. Other things like stiffness may not show up for years. There are few people out there who have the training and experience to determine if you are injured because no pain doesn’t necessarily mean, no injury.

“Myth #4 – The Emergency Room Doctor Released Me So I must be fine.

“Fact: The evaluations done by emergency room doctors are only meant to ensure you don’t suffer from any serious immediate injuries like broken bones, abrasions, lacerations, or concussions. Most of these doctors do recommend follow-up care to make sure they didn’t miss anything. Also, any x-rays they take are to rule out broken bones. They do not show soft tissue injuries well.

“Myth #5 – My insurance will go up if I see a doctor or bill my insurance.

“Fact: Your insurance will only go up if you are at fault, and only if the insurance company decides to. If you were not at fault then your rates should not go up.

“Myth #6 – All chiropractors are basically the same.

“Fact: Hardly. Some chiropractors, like me, concentrate in the diagnosis and safe treatment of soft tissue injuries caused by auto accidents. Seeing a doctor who is not familiar with  the sometimes complex paperwork and caring for auto accident patients can be disastrous to your case.

“Myth #7 – Children don’t get hurt in car accidents because they are young and flexible.

“Children get hurt all the time in car accidents, and are thought to be fine because they don’t complain about it. Your child can easily be injured in a car accident, (the same as you can) and should also be checked for soft tissue injuries following your accident.

“Let’s face it. Nobody likes the disruptions and hassles involved with auto accidents, let alone the discomfort and pain. As a specialist in treating car accident victims, I know that the last thing you want is to take time out of your busier than ever schedule to get checked out!

“Of course, you can wait and hope you are okay. That’s always your option. But it’s also the biggest risk you can take because any injuries you may have will start to heal incorrectly leading to long days of headaches, neck pain, stiffness, and eventually degenerative arthritis. These are all things that can be avoided.  Recently, the Nat’l Hwy Traffic Safety Administration  reported “A 10 Mile Per Hour Rear End Collision Is Equal TO the occupant catching a 200 lbs. Bag of cement dropped from a second story window!”

How to Avoid Needing a Chiropractor

Chiropractic care has many benefits.  It relives pain for either a longtime or permanently.  Although you do not need a reason to seek chiropractic care, because this natural form of medicine is safe, most turn to a chiropractor when in pain.  If you are uninsured or have coverage that does not extend to chiropractic care, you want to limit your visits.  How can you reduce the need for a chiropractor?

With good posture.  Poor posture is the leading cause of back and neck pain.  It is important to sit up straight, but vital when sitting at a desk or computer eight hours a day.  If you have slouched for years, still visit a chiropractor.  They can see if any damage has been done and fix it.  Then, work on correcting your posture.  Each time you find yourself slouching, sit up straight.

With good exercise habits.  Those who want to lose weight, rely heavily on exercise to achieve their goal.  Unfortunately, many make costly mistakes.  These mistakes include overdoing it and poor exercise habits.  Lifting weights is good for building muscle strength, but it is easy to damage the back, spine, and other joints.  Hold all weight right and choose a low weight.  Never overdo it.  Stop exercising when tired.

Pinole CA chiropractic careWith ideal weight.  Not only should you exercise, but eat healthy too. When combined these should result in weight loss or the maintaining of a healthy body weight.  Those who are overweight or obese are at an increased risk of back pain, neck pain, and knee pain.  The body can carry around excess weight, but it isn’t healthy.  Lose weight, maintain a healthy weight, and you eliminate the need for chiropractic care.

With good stretching habits.  Everyone should stretch.  It is important to stretch before any strenuous activity, but some can benefit from regular stretching.  Those with rheumatoid arthritis can seek relief pain relief and reduce the risk of stiffness and deformities.  Stretching can promote healthy joints and muscles, which should reduce the need for a chiropractor.

With good sleeping habits.  A lot of focus is placed on our activities during the day, but how you sleep can also bring on pain and the need for a chiropractor.  For starters, always sleep on a bed.  It is easy to fall asleep on a couch or in a recliner when watching television, but prolonged sleep in this position can lead to pain.  A good mattress is also important.  Even if on a budget, a good, quality mattress is a wise investment.

With good lifting habits.  We all lift things.  Whether it be boxes when moving, grocery bags from shopping, or when shoveling snow, we all do it.  Most people do not lift properly.  Yes, it is easier to lift with your arms and elbows, but this places a strain on all joints.  The spice, back, and neck are susceptible to pain.  Instead, lift with your entire body.  Bend your knees and keep your back straight.  Never carry loads that are too heavy.

As you can see, there are many ways to reduce or eliminate the need for a chiropractor.  What are you waiting for?  Get started now.  But, if you are getting a late start in life, see a chiropractor first.  Ensure all joints and the spine are in tact and properly.  Then, get started.

Chiropractic Care versus Traditional Medical Care

Pinole, CA Chiropractic CareAre you suffering from mild to severe pain and discomfort?  Whether it is your knees, hands, neck, back, fingers, toes, or another part of the body that hurts, you may be ready to schedule an appointment with your primary care physician.  This is nice, but have you considered chiropractic care?  If not, you should.  It is similar, but also very different from traditional medical care.  How?

Natural versus Artificial

Over the past few years, a lot of focus has been placed on natural and organic.  Many Americans are making the switch to all natural and organic foods and supplements.  This nice, but many of those same people turn to traditional forms of medicine and over-the-counter pain relievers to seek relief.  This is not natural.  Chiropractic care is.  Chiropractors may use x-rays and MRIs to diagnose a problem and decide on a course of treatment, but that treatment is done with the precision of the hands.  It is manual therapy.

Medications are commonly prescribed in traditional forms of medical care.  They are not with chiropractic care.  In fact, chiropractors are unable to write prescriptions.  Some believe this is because they “aren’t enough of a doctor.”  This is not true.  The main reason for their inability to write prescriptions is because they do not believe in their use.  Patients are not discouraged from seeking temporarily pain relief with over-the-counter products, but it is only temporary.  Chiropractors prefer to make adjustments to treat the problem of pain at it source, not mask the problem with prescription medication.

Side Effects

In keeping with medication, it is important to note the side effects.  They are common.  It is rare to find a prescribed pain reliever without side effects.  Even little side effects, such as an upset stomach or dizziness, can have a profound impact on your life.  When seeking medical care, you want to seek relief, not have a new set of problems to deal with.  That is why chiropractic care is best to treat pain, discomfort, and decreased mobility.  Since there are no drugs prescribed, you will not experience side effects.  But, you will get positive effects from either proper adjustments or therapeutic massages.

In terms of safety, there are little to no risks associated with chiropractic care.  In fact, care is recommended for individuals of all ages.  Both those young and old can benefit from chiropractic care.  With traditional medical care, there are more risks present.  Many of the medications prescribed are only safe for certain individuals.  For example, those under the age of 4 can rarely seek safe pain relief from over-the-counter or prescribed medications.  They can, however, get a safe therapeutic massage or undergo a safe realignment to treat pain and discomfort.

Chiropractors cannot perform surgery.  In most cases, it is not needed.  Patients who seek medical care experience pain, discomfort, and decreased mobility.  As previously stated, realignment or a therapeutic massage may do the trick.  Since surgery is only considered a last resort and performed by surgeon, there is little risk of complications.  Surgery opens up a world of complications, including the invasion of germs and infection.  Since the body is naturally healed using manual therapy, complications are non-existent.

NOTE:  Chiropractors encourage those suffering from pain, discomfort, and difficultly moving to seek chiropractic care.  What they don’t encourage is avoiding all traditional forms of medical care.  Some conditions, such as the flu, cancer, and diabetes cannot be treated with manual therapy.  Never put your health at risk.  Chiropractic care is best to treat pain and discomfort.  Always keep your primary care physician in mind for other non-pain related medical problems.

In short, there are many differences between chiropractic care and medical care.  So, which should you opt for?  If you suffer from pain or experience difficulty moving, contact a local chiropractor.  See what they can do for you.  Since there are little to no risks, you have nothing to lose.

Chiropractic Care versus Pain Medication

Pinole CA ChiropractorChiropractic Care versus Pain Medication

Do you suffer from mild to severe to unbearable pain?  Regardless of its cause, you may turn to pain relievers.  These are available over-the-counter and by prescription.  Did you know they are not your only alternative?  In fact, they are one of the worst.  A better option is to seek chiropractic care.

As nice as it is to hear that chiropractic care is better than pain pills, you may be wondering why.  What proof is there?  Continue reading on for a detailed comparison.  In the end, you will see why chiropractic care is better.

Fixing the Problem

Pain medication does not fix a problem.  Yes, it does provide relief, but only short-term relief.  Pain medication only masks the problem.  It is still there.  As soon as your pain pills wear off, the pain is likely to return.  If you suffer from recurring headaches, it may be another day before the next headache returns, but it will.

Chiropractors fix the problem.  Yes, they want to treat your pain.  They just go about it differently.  They don’t want to mask the problem.  Instead, they treat it and by going directly to the source.  For many, this is the spine and connecting joints.  By treating the problem at the source, you will get relief, but that relief should be long-lasting, if not permanent.

Side Effects

Pain relievers are full of side effects.  This is particularly true with prescription pain relievers.  Takers can experience upset stomachs, drowsiness, nausea, and more.  Even the smallest side effects can negatively affect our lives.  How can you work if your pain pills make you drowsy?  It will be difficult, if not impossible.  Pain relief should improve your life, not create a whole new set of problems to deal with.

Chiropractic care is all natural.  It involves manual therapy.  This is therapy of the hands.  Temporary relief is sought with ongoing therapeutic massages.  Overtime, they can lead to long-term relief.  Another form of long-term relief is chiropractic adjustments or realignments.  For example, a patient suffering from rheumatoid arthritis can get less pain and improved movement with finger joint adjustments.

As previously stated, most pain relievers, even over-the-counter pills, have side effects.  If it wasn’t bad enough, there are many other additional risks.  Certain medications can result in stomach ulcers and bleeding.  This is common with continued and prolonged use.  Some medications interact with others.  Pain medications are risky for children, the elderly, and pregnant or nursing mothers.  Still, people use them and doctors prescribe them. That however, does not mean they are safe.

Chiropractic care, as stated above, is natural.  There is no medication given.  The hands provide therapy.  Since there is no medication and no invasive medical procedures, it is safe.  In fact, chiropractic care is safe for individuals of all ages.  The old, young, and even pregnant and nursing women can seek relief through this natural form of healthcare.  All should, as it is safer.

With pain reliever, think long-term.  They only mask the problem, so it is likely to return.  This results in the consumption of more medication.  Not only is this risky, but very costly.  Even with insurance covering the cost of most prescription pain relievers, their costs add up over a period of time.

Many fear the cost of chiropractors.  For starters, insurance does cover the cost of most treatment.  Next, continued care is not required in all cases.  Your chiropractor may perform a neck adjustment, have you comeback for a follow-up appointment, and return again to show you helpful at-home techniques to reduce pain.  After that, you may be done.  Three appointments with a chiropractor, even if you pay out-of-pocket, are cheaper than years worth of pain pills.

In short, chiropractic care is not only safer, but cheaper, less invasive, and long-lasting.  So, the next time you find yourself reaching for pain relievers to treat you pain and discomfort, please stop.  Make an appointment with a local chiropractor.  You may be surprised how easy it is to seek long-lasting or permanent relief.

Chiropractic Care: What If Your Primary Care Physician Says No?

Dear Pinole patients,

Pinole CA Chiropractic CareHere is the scenario:  You are suffering painful, recurring migraines.  You head to your primary care physician.  They prescribe pain medication to treat your migraine headaches.  You are sent on your way to deal with the pain as it returns.  You stop and think “maybe this isn’t right.”  You ask your primary care physician about chiropractic care.  They tell you it does not work or that you are only wasting your money.  What should you do?

For years, there have been some troubling problems between the traditional medical field and chiropractic care.  Some primary care physicians believe that chiropractors are nothing but glorified spa masseuses.  Is this true?  No.  In fact, these ideas are slowly decreasing.  More primary care physicians are realizing the benefits of chiropractic care.  Unfortunately, you may have an “old school,” doctor who has yet to realize the benefits.  What should you do?

First, turn to the internet.  Perform a standard internet search with the phrase “chiropractic benefits.”  You will see many results.  Many are websites of chiropractors explaining their practice and their medical schooling.  Others are firsthand accounts of pain suffering people who have sought and received relief from a chiropractor.  So, if some people do seek relief from this type of medical care, why are some primary care physicians so against the procedure?

PCP Versus Chiropractic Care

Primary care physicians tend to believe that medications and surgery are best courses of treatment.  Chiropractors utilize neither.  They provide natural relief.  In fact, they do more than just temporarily relive the pain; they stop it at the source.  They do so naturally with manual therapy.  A patient with neck pain may need an adjustment.  This is done with precision force and thrust.

If you want to seek chiropractic care, it is your choice to do so. Truthfully, your primary care doctor should be supportive of your decision.  If they believe it will not work, they should still let you try.  A doctor who discourages you or outright prohibits you from seeing a chiropractor does not have your best interest at heart.  As previously stated, this care is all natural, so there are no risks.  Since there are no risks, you have nothing to lose.

If you are interested in scheduling an appointment with a chiropractor, turn to your local phonebook or the internet.  If your primary care physician was unreceptive to the treatment, they likely don’t have a referral or suggestion for you.  If covered by health insurance, see if coverage is extended to chiropractor care.  If it is, choose one that accepts your insurance.  With insurance coverage or price comparing, you can easily find an affordable chiropractor.  Since you have nothing to lose physically and the costs are affordable, see what type of relief you can get.

Seeking Chiropractic Care: What You Need to Know

Pinole CA chiropractic careDo you suffer from pain, discomfort, or have difficulty moving?  Whether that pain is caused by arthritis, an injury, or if you don’t know the cause, you may consider chiropractic care.  Chiropractic care is a natural way to seek pain relief.  With proper treatment, that relief will be long-term and long-lasting.  However, if this is your first time seeking chiropractic care, you may have many questions.  Continue reading on to get your answers.

Question: What types of conditions can chiropractors treat?

Answer:  A wide range.  Many are actually surprised to hear that chiropractors treat more than just back pain.  This is a common misconception.  In actuality, they treat a wide range of medical conditions that result in pain, discomfort, and decreased mobility.  They typically treat neuromusculosketal complaints and joint pains in the entire body.

Question: What types of treatments are offered in chiropractic care?

Answer:  Many.  Although many procedures are performed, two are common.  They are adjustments and therapeutic massages.  One mistake that many make is believing that they can perform these procedures at home; it is very risky.  A chiropractic adjustment is a fine practice that only a few know how to master.  Yes, only the hands are used, but precision force is required.  The hands manipulate joints to enhance function, improve mobility, and reduce pain.  These joints are important to mobility.  One wrong move and a person can land themselves in a world of pain.

Question: Is chiropractic care safe?

Answer:  Yes.  Many are surprised to learn just how safe chiropractic care is.  It is actually a lot safer than most traditional forms of medicine.  Chiropractors do not prescribe medication.  They cannot, but most would not anyways.  This is because they believe in natural relief.  They also aim for more than just temporary relief, but a permanent solution to the problem.  Most primary care physicians mask pain with over-the-counter or prescribed pain pills.  This temporarily stops pain, but it will return.  On the other hand, chiropractors target the source of the pain and fix it.  So, not only is chiropractic care safe, but you get better, longer lasting results.

Question: Do you need a referral before seeing a chiropractor?

Answer:  You shouldn’t.  Many insurance providers do require referrals for specialists, such as surgeons.  Although chiropractors do have a specialty, which is natural manual therapy, they are not legally classified as specialists.  All states classify them as contact physicians.  This means your insurance provider should not require you to have a referral.  In fact, chiropractors provide referrals.  In cases that they cannot treat, such as a neck fracture, the patient is referred to a qualified surgeon.

Question: Does chiropractic care hurt?

Answer:  It shouldn’t.  If you opt for a certified chiropractor who performs all procedures correctly it should not hurt.  The only exception is with a therapeutic massage.  If you suffer from arthritis, your joints already hurt.  The first couple of touches may result in some discomfort, but that will soon disappear.  As for adjustments, they should not hurt.  Although chiropractors advise against cracking our knuckles, we have all done it.  It is similar.  You may hear a popping sound, but will feel no pain.

Question: How do I find a chiropractor?

Answer:  You have many options.  It is easier to turn to your local phone book.  In the yellow pages or the business directory, look under the headings of “physicians,” or “chiropractic care.”  The American Chiropractic Association (ACA) allows you to search for doctors of chiropractic (D.C.) on their website, located at

Question: Does insurance cover chiropractic care?

Answer:  It depends on your insurance company and the coverage plan you selected.  A growing number of insurance providers are extending coverage for chiropractic care.  Some are doing so at the suggestion of employers and employees.  Those in physically demanding professions, such as construction and mail delivery, can benefit from having easy and affordable access to care.

Question: What about those who do not have health insurance?

Answer:  If you do not have health insurance, do not avoid seeking chiropractic care.  Instead, find a care provider who is willing to work with you.  Some will develop affordable payment plans.  Some chiropractors also accept credit cards as payment.  Although the costs increase with late fees and interest rates, it may be your only way to seek relief.
